BACK TO NO WIND - AHHHH!

BACK TO NO WIND - AHHHH!

Well when I went to bed last night the winds were still blowing in at 25 to 30 knots and we were still humming along. I was expecting the conditions to ease by this afternoon so when I woke up at 7pm my time to get prepared for my live cross to Studio 10 today I checked the winds again and we were already down to 10 knots of wind……….

SOME FANTASTIC SAILING

SOME FANTASTIC SAILING

I hope it is a lot warmer where you all are, while today was 2 whole degrees warmer it is still freezing. Just so cold that I cry from the pain in my hands during sail changes... Yesterday, I eventually got to bed by 10am, and because I don't feel that I have cleared the main shipping and fishing boats yet, I am still doing short naps in blocks of sleep to make sure I can keep an eye on things……..

LACKING WIND & SLEEP

LACKING WIND & SLEEP

Well it has been a period of no sleep again, but I am working through it. Yesterday morning the winds continued to ease, and I ended up going on deck to unfurl the big no 1 jib on the bow. It was dark, and I realised that I couldn't actually remember the last time I used that sail because the winds have been so strong, for so long. While I love a good storm, and in stormy conditions………….

HEADING HOME

HEADING HOME

What a whirl wind it has been with all the emotions of rounding Cape Horn. There are several tactical decisions to consider for the next few days. The first one is, do I pass between Argentina sailing on the outside of the Isla de Los Estado and the Brudwood Bank, or sail around…….

CAPE HORN

CAPE HORN

Once Climate Action Now was settled down, I remained on deck just watching Cape Horn get closer and closer until finally at 10:38:35 we safely sailed past Cape Horn and transitioned from the South Pacific Ocean and sailed into the South Atlantic. We had done it……

ALMOST AT CAPE HORN

ALMOST AT CAPE HORN

With the safe rounding of Cape Horn becoming my primary focus I set about to try to get as much sleep as possible before getting too close to land. Once I was close, I would need to be up until I was safely clear again on the other side. So, while I didn't go to bed early, only making it to bed at 9am I did stay all day in bed and ended up getting up to do a sail change at 5pm and see if I could spot land. The conditions have been……..

OMG - THE WHEEL FELL OFF

OMG - THE WHEEL FELL OFF

Well after yesterdays no sleep day I tried to make today a sleep and only sleep day. I think I was successful in getting a good night’s rest, but not quite enough to have caught up on sleep. I went to bed at 6am or there about yesterday and while I did set my alarms to wake me multiple times, I managed to stay in bed and sleep from 6 to 11, 12-5 and then 6-10 so I really did manage to get some rest. When I did get up, I woke up feeling groggy and not quite with it. But after a little while I was able to fully wake up and felt so much better………..

SOBBING - SCREAMING - MEGA HISSY FIT

SOBBING - SCREAMING - MEGA HISSY FIT

Well today was a little of what I like to call a 'bad day in the office'. I was feeling rather proud of myself, when I managed to get to bed while the sun was still down at 5am, all snuggled into my sleeping bag with my hot water bottle and ready for a lovely warm sleep. I was really looking forward to it as I have been feeling like I am quite sleep deprived right now. I have not a lot of rest over this last week with alarms tripping or knockdowns occurring, and I was making an effort to sleep bank ahead of rounding Cape Horn…….

THREE DAYS TO CAPE HORN

THREE DAYS TO CAPE HORN

Well again this morning I didn't actually manage to get to bed until just after 9am after being awake all night so I decided to make today a bit of a rest day and sleep as much as I possibly could. As I was just starting to think about getting to bed the winds eased a little and I was left trying to decide if I should shake a reef in the main sail or not…….
